International Conference
15-16 May 2025
Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden
The aim of this conference is to critically examine justice as a framework for understanding the situation of sex workers in Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic region, and more broadly in the European context. Ongoing debates on the governance of sex work at both national and European level, as well as the (lack of) realisation of sex workers' rights, anti-gender mobilisations and democratic backsliding, point to the importance of exploring this issue from the perspective of sex workers' rights and realization of justice. Therefore, this conference aims to develop localised knowledge and perspectives that address the specific political, cultural and social contexts in order to better understand the different dimensions of justice for sex workers, especially in Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic region.
This conference invites contributions mainly from scholars representing and/or doing research the Baltic region and Central and Eastern Europe and the broader European context. It encourages both theoretical discussions on the framing of justice for sex workers as well as empirical examples and case studies of how justice is (or is not) realised in various aspects such as citizenship and migration, violence, digital rights, crime, health, taxation, stigmatisation, access to the political sphere, housing, and other areas.
We invite original research papers, case studies, theoretical explorations addressing, but not limited to, the following topics:
· Sex workers' rights in Central and Eastern Europe, Baltic region and beyond
· Anti-trafficking policies in the Baltic region and CEE: past and present
· Mobilisations for sex workers' rights in the Baltic and CEE regions and beyond
· Participatory and collaborative research with sex workers
· Theoretical approaches to the study of justice for sex workers
